The Horticulture/Landscaping program is designed for students who like being outdoors, working with the environment. This can be a one or two year course. Students are prepared to continue on to a post-secondary education or to go directly into the work force. This program offers students a variety of experiences in the horticulture industry. Students learn the basics of growing plants both indoors and outside. The major areas of emphasis are on landscaping, greenhouse management, floral design and interior plantscaping. The course includes the use of small power equipment. The classroom, greenhouse and school grounds provide practical learning and work opportunities in commercial horticulture. Students plan, install and maintain the landscaping around the school. Students also run a popular flower shop. All students are members of the Waldo County FFA Chapter, which is a national leadership organization.
The Natural Resources Management program is designed for students who like to be outdoors, working with the environment. This program can be a one or two year course. Students are prepared to go on to post-secondary education or to go directly into the work force. This program offers students the opportunity to learn about natural resources in a combined academic and hands-on practical setting. Students utilize the school’s 35 acre campus to learn about land management and soils, water resources, forestry, wildlife, and outdoor recreation. The program includes the use of small power equipment and large tractor operation. Students can receive a US Department of Labor Tractor Safety Certificate. Students participate in the Maine Envirothon each year, and are also members of the Waldo County FFA Chapter which is a national leadership organization.
